HC upholds death sentence of 2 convicts
The High Court on Thursday upheld the death sentence of two convicts for killing college student Kamrul Islam Momin.
A two-member HC bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singh and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam gave its verdict after concluding hearing of appeals and death reference.
In 2011, the Speedy Trail Tribunal-4 judge M Rezaul Islam sentenced three convicts, including Motijheel Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam, death penalty and six others to life term imprison.
Of the condemned convicts, OC Rafiqul died in December, 2015. The two others are : Shakhawat Hossain Jewel and Tareq alias Zia. They are absconding.
According to the case statement, Momin, 22, a student of Dhaka Commerce College and also Dhaka city unit JSD Chhatra League's assistant general secretary, was shot dead near his Ibrahimpur residence in the capital on September 13, 2005 following a dispute over boundary wall.
Later, Momin's father filed a case with Kafrul police alleging that OC Rafique hired the killers as a sequel to the conflict.
