North South University (NSU) ranked top among the best private universities of Bangladesh, according to a recent survey conducted by two media outlets.
The survey was conducted based on both the academics and employers of the universities.
The survey titled 'The Dhaka Tribune-Bangla Tribune Private University Rankings 2017' was published on Friday included the names and scores of the top 20 private universities based on two criteria: the Factual Score and the Perpetual Score.
The Perceptual Scores in the Dhaka Tribune - Bangla Tribune Private University Rankings 2017 offer various insights about higher education
Factual scores were based on data from a University Grants Commission report in 2014, which highlighted factors such as the number of students, faculty members, PhD holders and the amount of research spending at the universities.
Meanwhile, the perceptual scores were based on responses to a survey from around 150 academics and an equal number of employers at various organisations, who rated the universities' academic environment, infrastructure, quality of faculty members, and various aspects of the job performance of graduates.
Academics included deans, head of departments, registrar and senior teachers. Employers of university graduates were represented by a responsible person in HR departments who recruit university graduates on a regular basis.
The survey was designed separately for the two groups. All respondents were asked to give universities a score of 1-10 in six variables but also a weight of 1-10 for each variable that showed how important they thought that factor was.
NSU came in second in the overall rankings, 7.82 points behind Brac University in top position. While Brac also topped the Factual Scores, where NSU ranked 3rd, NSU finished above Brac in first place in terms of the Perceptual Scores.
In the breakdown of the Perceptual Scores, NSU was ranked as the top university in terms of academic and working environment, infrastructure, quality of faculty, quality of student intake, quality of graduates, graduate's performance on the job, graduate's ability to communicate and graduate's problem solving ability, as well as in terms the overall scores from both academics and employers. In the two remaining categories of graduate's ability to take initiative and work in teams, NSU finished second.
Brac University, on the other hand, finished second in each of these categories with the exception of the graduates ability to take initiative and their ability to work in teams, where they were ranked as the top university, and in the categories of academic/working environment and infrastructure, where they finished fourth.
