TV health show presenter and physician Dr Shakira Nova recently presented a keynote paper on reproductive health, media and regional cooperation in a conference at Kathmandu, Nepal.
She said, "There are taboos, superstitions and restrictions relating to menstruation, sexual and reproductive health. These restrictions limit girls' choices and actions during menstruation in South Asian countries including Bangladesh and Nepal."  She advised that media should raise consciousness, stimulate public discussion, articulate public aspirations, disseminate information and reflect on social norms to break taboos related to menstruation.  She highlighted the role of media to promote sexual and reproductive health.
She further added that most of these taboos are creating negative impacts among the women. Therefore, media should play an important role in breaking the culture of silence, stigma and discrimination associated with menstruation, sexual and reproductive health while giving emphasis on working through regional cooperation.
