Have you ever thought of acquiring employability skills without attending classes or seminars avoiding the laborious journey to and from the coaching centre for hours? Or ever thought of making money being an e-Teacher of graphic designing, social media marketing, programming, and other essential skills job market demand? And that too - all in your native language?
Well, that's exactly what REPTO endeavours. REPTO Education Centre is country's first and currently the only online course marketplace in Bangladesh aiming to democratize the education system by providing high-quality affordable skill development and job-generating online courses to the potential youth of Bangladesh. More precisely, it is designed for experts and teachers looking for students and students looking for skill development courses online.
The 21 years old founder and CEO of REPTO, Istiyak Sheyam, in his college days, found that they were being taught opening notepad on Windows XP 2000 in the ICT course. He wondered instead of preparing them for the future why they were being prepared for the age-old technology which is almost out of order. He realized that the academic curriculum is much backdated and lacks skill-oriented knowledge to some extent.
Sheyam became frustrated about the academic curriculum and started learning mathematics, programming, and entrepreneurship from the different online platforms. And by the end of 2014, He developed a course namely "Mathematics for Programming" and uploaded it on Udemy.
Within only three months, more than three thousand students enrolled themselves in the course from USA, India, Pakistan, and from other countries but there was no one from Bangladesh. By this time, he went through a study which reports that 6 out of 10 graduates in Bangladesh are unemployed due to the lack of skill needs for employment. Such a predicament motivated him to introduce a platform where experts can offer job oriented skill development courses in Bangla and students can learn them at their own pace.
Sheyam shares, "There is a shortage of specialized skill based institutions in Bangladesh especially in the rural areas. Therefore, I wanted to introduce a platform where youths from any of corner of Bangladesh can acquire career oriented and income generating skills based on their personal interest. REPTO aims at providing such skills to the potential youth in their own language throughout the country."
Starting with only three courses, it has now 55 active courses designed and developed by 162 e-Teachers to provide students with employability skills and qualities required to survive in the job market which is becoming progressively competitive over times. More than forty thousand students from all over the country have been enrolled and churned out in different courses from its establishment in 2015.
You need nothing much to be a student of REPTO. If you have a laptop or a desktop computer with internet connection, you can easily get access to the country's biggest plethora of skill development courses.
After creating an account, you'll get access to over 15 lecture videos for a free trial period. You can directly ask questions to the lecturers, get real-time support using the student dashboard, if necessary.
No matter if you don't have access to the internet as it has already developed a desktop app that can be used offline. The app is designed especially for the students outside of Dhaka and the full course contents can be loaded from the DVD provided by REPTO.
The courses are usually a series of 30 to 50 short lectures. The best thing with REPTO is its convenient and affordable course fee ranging between BDT 200 and 2500. The average course fee falls within a budget of BDT 1000 which students can pay through mobile payment system like bKash, Rocket, credit card or internet banking.
It even offers up to 80 per cent scholarship for the poor students and the course fee can be paid by instalments. However, there are many basic courses that can be learned for free.
It has already proved to be a successful start-up and new generation teaching-learning platform enabling students to learn whatever they want and whenever they want to develop their skills and boost their career.
For its outstanding success, it has been awarded Swiss Embassy Award-2017, SeedStars Dhaka 2017 (Runner Up), Bangladesh Startup Award-2017, Digital Innovation Award-2016, Digital World-2016, BRAC Marathon Digital Innovation Award-2016.
