The government plans to save 10,000 MW of electricity by ensuring efficiency both in use and power generation.
Adviser to the Prime Minister for Power and Energy told the Daily Observer on Monday, "We have a plan to ensure efficiency in the whole power sector. Use of electricity, transmission and distribution will be efficient so that we can save huge amount of electricity."
He said, "By increasing efficiency we can save some 10,000 MW of electricity. That means we should not generate a huge amount of power."
The Power System Master Plan (PSMP)-2016 which is being formulated pinning 2041 has laid emphasis on the efficient As per the Master Plan - 2016 the government will generate 51,000 MW of electricity by 2041 which is 10,000 MW lower than earlier Master Plan. And the 10,000 MW will be saved by increasing efficiency. According to Master Plan - 2010 some 60,000 MW is supposed be generated.
According to the Power Development Board (PDB) the present system loss is around 10 per cent, distribution loss 10 per cent and transmission loss 13.5 per cent.
Bangladesh Power Grid Company (PGCB) Managing Director Engr Masum-Al-Beruni told this correspondent, "Now we are improving the national grid to smart grid. The smart grid will monitor the transmission so that the system loss is decreased and power transmission made smooth".
To implement the project for generating the huge amount of electricity the government has to arrange huge amount of fuel which is yet uncertain. Due to this uncertainty the Power Cell, a planning wing of PDB is changing the fuel category.
As per earlier Master Plan coal was the main fuel. Some 50 per cent power was supposed to be generated by burning coal. Now it has been decreased by 35 per cent.
A Power Board official said, "The Master Plan is not a constant plan it is a continuous process. Considering the present fuel situation we may generate 35 per cent of power by burning coal." For the local fuel crisis the Power Board is depending on imported fuel. But globally fossil fuel crisis is getting worse. So efficiency is mandatory for power security.
