6 fishermen convicted for killing deer in Sundarban

BAGERHAT, Apr 25: A mobile court at Sharankhola upazila here sentenced six fishermen to one-year imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000 each for killing deer from the Sundarban.
Sharankhola Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Atul Mondal announced the verdict on Saturday evening. They were sent to Bagerhat district jail on Sunday morning.
The convicted are: Md Jafar Sarder, 23, son of Md Nakim Uddin Sarder, Md Ashikur Molla, 23, and Md Hafizur Molla, 30, sons of Sohrab Molla, Ripon Sheikh, 28, son of Yunus Sheikh, Shukur Ali Sheikh, 25, son of Mostak Sheikh, and Shamim Sheikh, 22, son of Halim Sheikh of Pankhali village under Dakop upazila of Khulna district.
In-charge of Kokilmuni patrolling outpost Md Ismail Hossen said, 11 fishermen along with two boats entered the Sundarban after taking pass from the Dhangmari station for collecting crabs around 1.5 weeks ago.
On Friday last, during a regular patrolling, forest rangers raided the two boats while five fishermen fled inside the jungle. Later, searching the boats, the forest rangers arrested the six fishermen along with two kilograms of venison and deer
catching traps.
The arrested were presented before the mobile court and the court convicted them.
Assistant Conservator of Forests of Sharankhola Range under Sundarban East Zone Kamal Uddin Ahammed said the verdict is the first of its kind following the killing of deer from Sundarban under Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012.
