Police-villagers clash in Banshkhali power plant, 3 killed

CHITTAGONG, April 4: At least three persons were killed and more than 50 people were injured including police member in a clash at Gondamara Coal based Power Plant under Banshkhali upazila this noon.
The deceased were identified as Mortuza Ali, son of late Ashraf Ali, his brother Ankur Ali, 45 and Jaker Ahmed, 35, son of Nur Ahmed, all hailed from the same area and another was unidentified.
According to the source, on early Monday morning, police arrested seven people from the area. Following the arrest of the 7 persons the organisation titled Homestead protection Committee (Basatvita Rokhah Committee) declared a meeting protesting the arrest. But local Administration imposed section 144 in the area to ban the meeting. Ignoring the 144, the committee held a meeting and police tried to obstruct them, but failed.
At one moment the villagers became furious attacking the local police force deployed there to maintain law and order situation.
Then the police opened fire to the agitating villagers resulting in the death of four on the spot.
In the incident, 11 police men including ansars were injured while more than 50 villagers were injured in the clash.
But the Banshkhali thana OC denied the killing of four people.  The SP of Chittagong did not receive any call through cell phone again and again.
Meanwhile, during the last one month, the villagers of the area have been trying to obstruct the construction of the Coal Based Power Plants in the location in such a densely populated area. It may be mentioned that local S Alam Group with the cooperation of a Chinese company had taken the project to build a coal based power plant in the area.
