Knowledge sharing workshop on nutritious OFSP held in Gaibandha

Gaibandha: A day-long knowledge sharing workshop on nutritious OFSP (Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato) was held at the hall room of SKS Inn at Radhakrishnapur under Sadar upazila in the distinct on Sunday.

CIP Bangladesh and brac arranged the workshop under SUSTAIN project funded by UKaid in collaboration with department of agriculture extension and Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI).

Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad addressed the workshop as the chief guest and superintendent of police M. Ashraful Islam, civil surgeon Dr. Nirmalendu Chowdhury and deputy director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin were present as the special guests.

With director of Tuber Crops Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur Dr. Jahangir Hossain in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by district nutrition support officer of unicef M. Quamruzzaman, district market investigator M. Moazzem Hossain, OFSP vine cultivator Raihan Ferdous Palash, cultivator Bilkis Akter, community nutrition scholar Jesika Akter and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.

The speakers in their speeches unequivocally underscored the need for farming OFSP in larger scale to change the socio-economic condition of the growers and meet up the nutritional demand in the country to build a healthy nation.

Earlier, a welcome speech was delivered by country manager of CIP Bangladesh Mir Asgar Ali and said about 380 bighas of land owned by 2500 farmers of Sadar and Fulchhari upazila had been brought under the OFSP farming this year for the first time.

Grodon Prain and Dr. Simon Heck from CIP Peru, sector leader of CIP Bangladesh Dr. EHM Shofiur Rahman and programme head of brac Shudhir Chandra Nath also presented their key note papers on OFSP through multimedia projector.

DC M. Abdus Samad in his speeches assured all of giving all sorts of administrative cooperation to the concerned to expand the farming of OFSP in the district in coming years and make the project here fruitful.

A series of recommendations and strategies raised by the participants were also adopted during the open discussion session on how to attain the cherished goal of the project in near future.

Besides, the participants visited the stall where OFSP vines, seedlings, and different food items prepared with OFSP root and leaf were displayed amid much enthusiasm, said field coordinator Enamul Haque.

A number of government and non government agri officials, NGO representatives, and OFSP growers including media men took part in the workshop.
