Sixth Nat'l Council
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is going to bring some changes to its organisational structure at the upcoming national council to strengthen the party.
A draft will be prepared by next Saturday to bring the necessary changes at the tri-annual sixth national council, BNP sources said.
According to the party insiders, BNP wants to create new hopes among its leaders and workers comprising youth and experienced leaders in the party by holding the council on March 19.
"Hopefully, fresh enthusiasm will develop among the party leaders and workers by holding the national council," Abdullah Al Noman, Vice-Chairman of BNP, told the daily Observer.
All necessary steps will be taken to turn the party into a modern democratic organisation in the world and to enable it to wage a movement for restoration of democracy, the BNP leader added.
Apart from this, BNP high command instructed the party leaders to give specific suggestions for the welfare of the party. Some 55 important proposals have so far come from the councillors.
A ten-member committee for scrutinising the proposals headed by BNP Standing Committee member Tariqul Islam is working. The committee will also make a draft. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will discuss the draft at a policy making body meeting next week, BNP insiders said.
Of the proposals, BNP Chairperson's Adviser Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has proposed to form more or less 17 subjective sub-committees comprising experienced and skilled leaders, they added.
BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed has proposed to form a strong Advisory Board of the party which will be just below the Standing Committee members, the highest policy making body of the party.
Some also proposed to increase the numbers of the highest policy makers, vice-chairmen, joint secretary generals, organising secretaries and assistant organising secretaries.
Some councillors have proposed to create additional secretary general post to assist secretary general scrapping senior joint secretary general post of the party.
BNP Standing Committee member Tariqul Islam told the daily Observer, "Some structural changes may come in the party as per the proposals of the councillors which will be finalised in the next standing committee members meeting."
BNP Chairperson's Adviser Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan said, "Some changes in the party are now the demands of the time and hopefully, it will happen through the council."
"As per the proposal, we will send some recommendations to our party chairperson to implement," said Azam Khan, also a member of the drafting committee.
