Narayanganj, Feb 24: Six workers have drowned after a trawler sank in the Dhaleshwari River in Narayanganj's Sadar Upazila.
Though bodies of two of them had been found a little after the accident at Alirtek Union at around 12:15pm on Wednesday, Fire Service divers retrieved the four other bodies after 10 hours.
The vessel, MV Rahmat Ullah, had capsized after being hit by another sand-carrying trawler.
The bodies of the four were found at around 10:30pm, Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Dinumoni Sharma told reporters.
Authorities identified the victims as Nejab Ali, 'Sujon', 'Sabuj', 'Shahin', 'Taleb' and 'Shariful'. All of them are from Sirajganj.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Gausul Azam, who oversaw the rescue operation, said the families of the victims would be given Tk 20,000 each to meet the funeral costs.
Sirajul Islam is one of the workers who was on the trawler but he was lucky to survive. He said their vessel was on the way to Dhaka.
"A Dhaka-bound sand-laden trawler rammed our trawler when it lost control after getting caught in a whirlwind. Our vessel sank very quickly."
He said most of the workers had swam ashore, but the six died as they were sleeping under the deck when the trawler was sinking.
Boktaboli river police outpost In-Charge Abdur Razzak confirmed that the accident occurred due to the rough weather.
