The Supreme Court on Tuesday started hearing the appeal filed by condemned war criminal Mir Quasem Ali challenging the death penalty handed down to him for his war crimes.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, started the hearing in the morning.

The other judges of the bench are Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, Justice Bazlur Rahman and Justice Mirza Hussain Haider.

Advocate ASM Shahjan stood for Mir Quasem Ali while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.

On February 2, the SC fixed today (February 9) for the hearing on the petition filed by Quasem’s lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain.

On May 28 and August 18, 2015, the SC asked the defence and prosecution to submit the concise statements of the appeal.

On November 30, 2014, Mir Quasem Ali filed the appeal with the SC challenging the death penalty awarded to him by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

On November 2 in the same year, the tribunal had condemned Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
