U-19 Cricket: Bangladesh whitewashes West Indies

Chittagong: A brilliant century by opener Saif Hasan and five-wicket haul by Sanjit Saha enabled hosts Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket team to whitewash touring West Indies Under-19 side in the three-match Youth ODI series 3-0 beating the Caribbean by 16 runs in the 3rd and last match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the port city here on Saturday.

Chittagong City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin, DIG of Chittagong Range M Shafiqul Islam and Vice President of Robi Yeasir Noor were present at the day’s closing function and later they distributed the prizes.

Bangladesh, riding on a century by Pinak Ghosh, won the three-match Youth ODI series outplaying West Indies by a huge 171 runs in the 2nd match at the same venue on Thursday after a convincing eight-wicket victory in the first match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.

In the day’s match, Bangladesh Youth team opted to bat first after winning the toss and scored a moderate 235 for 7 in stipulated 50 overs.

Opener Saif Hasan contributed a polished innings of unconquered 107 off 147 balls featuring eleven fours and three sixes to be adjudged player of the series.

Number six Shafiul Hayet scored 69-ball 61 runs including nine fours and two down Jakir Ali added 25-ball 24 runs with three boundaries were the notable hosts batsman reaching the double digit while 18 runs of the innings came from extras.

GD Pope, KA Kallicharan and OF Smith took two wickets each conceding 20, 30 and 55 runs respectively.

In reply, the Caribbean team were all out for 219 runs in the 2nd last ball of the match (49.5 overs) against superb bowling by Sanjit Saha, who grabbed five wickets for 21 runs in 10 overs with three maidens.

Later, Sanjit Saha was adjudged man of the match.

For West Indies, opener GD Pope (57), two down Carty (42), opener TA Imlach (38), JU Goolie (23) and RD John (26) were the notable scorers.

Apart from Sanjit Saha’s five-wicket haul, Ariful Islam, Saeed Sarker, Abdul Hali and Mehedy Hasan Miraj took one wicket each.
