Speakers at a meeting on child rights issues called on the government to establish an independent department for children without further delay in ensuring child rights in the country.
They said this at a discussion organised to celebrate the 25th year of United Nation's Convention on Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at Dhaka Reporter's Unity by child rights organisation National Children's Task Force (NCTF) in the city on Thursday.
Bangladesh signed the UNCRC on August in 1990.
NCTF Member Sayanti Rahman Tithi presented the key note while central committee advisor Faez Belal presided over the meeting.
In her keynote speech Sayanti Rahman Tithi said, "We have an online campaign titled NOT16 to protest against the controversial proposal to reduce marital age of girls and boys. We have sent a letter to the Prime Minister urging her to reconsider the decision. Besides, NCTF members have submitted memorandums regarding the issue to Deputy Commissioners of 64 districts."
She described Bangladesh's achievements in implementing child rights in three categories of advocacy.
