Comilla Zoo in poor condition

COMILLA, Nov 01: The Zoo at City's Kaliajhuri in the area of 10.15 acres amid a Botanical garden built in 1986, now in a poor condition where different spices of animals and birds are dropping off every year. The zoo has vast land of seventy five acres.
Now only sixteen animals and birds are alive there but their condition is relentless, among them a lion, seven different species monkeys, two bears, two river gulls, two Egyptian hens, a python and a hare.
Two years ago there were nine deer, another two monkeys and a fox, a peacock river gull, a. Now they are no more.
The peacock was died on first January this year. Deer are taken to another place. The lion has become sick.  Now most of the cases are empty.
Dear's sheds also have been empty. Logs are put into the cases. The animals living in the zoo are dying due to the negligence and shortage of food.
The side walls are very lower at east and north side. Many rootless children are seen crossing the wall easily. Although there are guards, they don't care about this.
Mamunur Rahman Patwary, lease holder of the zoo and Comilla Botanical garden said, 13 demands were submitted to the administration for the development of the zoo in  October 4, 2011, but no action was taken based on the demands.
Showpan Kumar Dutta, office assistant of Comilla Zilla Parishad said, from July 1, 2011 to 30 June 2014 was given a lease at Tk. 90 thousand. Lease holder provides food and takes care of the animals.
The visitors come in less number, everyday about 10 visitors visit here.
Although the zoo is remained open from morning to evening for the visitors, but many teenagers and young couples are seen staying there. As a result many guardians feel irritated with their children.
Soil has become detached from the root of many trees due to rain. Besides no new trees are being planted here. In a short time rain the botanical garden becomes flooded, especially lower area.
Alhaj Md. Omar Faruque, Administrator of Comilla Zilla Parishad said, the responsibility of the zoo and botanical garden is to the district administration, district administration gives lease the zoo.
There is no zoo like Comilla zoo where a few birds and animals in Bangladesh. Although there are huge possibility, but there is no development.
Comilla Zilla Parishad will take proper step according to the rules of the govt. for the development of the zoo and the botanical garden very soon, he added.
